Australia in South Africa, 2008/09, Day 1, 2nd Test

Day 1 - 2nd Test Australia 303 for 4 Against SA

Durban: South Africa hit back with the wickets of the two centurions as well as the Australian captain and five-captain for cheap, but at 303 for 4 by the close of play it had been Australia's day.

Phil Hughes hit a thrilling maiden Test century as Australia put South Africa's bowlers to the sword on the first day of the second Test at Kingsmead Friday.

Playing in his second Test, Hughes made 115 as Australia reached 303 for four at stumps day one. He and fellow left-hander Simon Katich seventh Test century with 108 in 190 balls put on 184 for the first wicket. He scored 16 boundaries.

Hughes, 20, announced himself as a new star of international cricket, thrashing 19 fours and two sixes in a 151-ball innings. The latest opening combination put on 184 for the first wicket with Hughes becoming Australia's youngest Test century maker since Doug Walters against England in Brisbane in 1965-66.

South Africa, seeking to draw level in the three-match series, bowled poorly on a good batting pitch, dropped two catches and used up both their referrals to the television umpire.

Brief Score: Australia 303/4 (Hughes 115, Katich 108) v South Africa
