Australia vs West Indies, 1st Test, 3rd Day

Windies Slump to Defeat Despite Barath Ton

Brisbane: A fighting century on debut from Adrian Barath was not enough as the West Indies slumped to an innings and 65-run defeat to Australia within three days in the first Test at the Gabba on Saturday.

Barath lashed 104 from just 138 balls but the visitors, following on in the second innings, could only manage 187 runs before surrendering to the Australians.

The West Indies first innings ended on 228 after Australia had declared their first innings on 480-8.

The visitors were abject in their performance and lost a total of 15 wickets in a single day! The only silver lining was provided by Adrian Barath, the 19-year old youngster from Trinidad and Tobago who scored a century on debut.

Their batting looked out of sorts and a lack of strategy and application made matters worse. Australia put up an excellent all round performance by first setting up a daunting first innings total of 480-8 (declared) and later bowling the opposition twice in just four sessions.

The slide started with Ben Hilfenhaus' brilliant spell with the new ball where he picked three top order wickets including that of skipper Gayle for just one and veteran Chanderpaul's for only two runs. It was one way traffic throughout on day three and one indication is that two Australians bowlers, Nathan Hauritz and Shane Watson were on a hat-trick.

Ben Hilfenhaus has been named the Man of the Match for his superb show with the ball. He picked two wickets in the first innings and three with the new ball in the second to skittle out West Indies cheaply. The burly Tasmanian also grabbed two catches in the deep today.

The next Test starts on Friday and Chris Gayle and company will have to rework their approach right from the scratch.
