Windies Fight After Follow-on, But India on Top

Kolkata: Barath (62) and Edwards (60) helped WI put up a better batting performance in the 2nd innings after being bundled out for 153 in the first. They were 195/3 at stumps on day 3, trailing by 283 against India in the second Test at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

Darren Bravo (38 not out) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (21 not out) were still holding the fort for the visitors as they stitched unbeaten 34 runs for the fourth wicket.

Windies lost two wickets in the post tea session as Ishant Sharma trapped Kirk Edwards (60) leg before to end the batsman's fine innings.

Edwards scored his second half-century as Windies batsmen showed some application in their second innings after being bowled out cheaply for 153 in the first innings.

Edwards hit a six and six boundaries in his 128-ball knock before becoming Ishant's second victim of the day.

Ishant Sharma struck in the first over after tea when he had Adrian Barath (62) caught by VVS Laxman at first slip.

Barath hit 10 fours in his 62-run knock and added 93 runs with Kirk Edwards for the second wicket.

Following-on, Barath and Edwards resumed the West Indies second innings after tea after they took the visitors to 116/1 in their second innings at tea-break.

Barath hit his third half-century off 78 balls with the help of 8 hits to fence.

The West Indies got off to a poor start in their second innings as Umesh Yadav had opener Kraigg Brathwaite caught behind by MS Dhoni.

Dhoni enforced the follow-on after Pragyan Ojha took four wickets to bundle out the West Indies for 153 runs in their first innings.

Apart from Ojha, Umesh Yadav chipped took three wickets as India took a first innings lead of 478 runs.

Yadav dismissed Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels in successive overs as the West Indies lost six wickets with less than 100 runs on the board.

Yadav took his second wicket when Bravo edged a delivery onto his stumps and in his next over the young pacer clean bowled Samuels (25) with a beauty that straightened after pitching.

Bravo hit 6 fours in his 30-run knock.

The West Indies lost their seventh wicket when Pragyan Ojha had their captain Darren Sammy (18) caught behind by MS Dhoni.

Ojha and R Ashwin struck in alternate overs to give India early breakthroughs.

Ojha took his 50th Test wicket when he trapped Kirk Edwards plumb in front of the wicket but Indian captain MS Dhoni replaced Ojha with Ashwin and the off-spinner responded with dismissing Shivnarine Chanderpaul leg before wicket.

Playing only his 13th Test, Ojha achieved the milestone with an arm ball that thudded into the pads of Edwards.

The day's play started with Edwards and Darren Bravo resuming the West Indies first innings at 34 for 2 in 1st innings.
