When Dilshan Met Sachin before the Ton

Johannesburg: The Indian team put its feet up, resting and relaxing after two days of hard toil and a lukewarm performance in a warm-up game. Gautam Gambhir emerged for a brief look-see at the world before retreating quickly but Sachin Tendulkar was up and about early.

Everyone had his own little plan, but Tendulkar's were a bit disrupted when he ran into the Lankans as they were leaving for Centurion. Tillakaratne Dilshan, who had a memorable opening game, greeted Tendulkar enthusiastically, but as expected the exchange was more like one between master and pupil.

"So you are playing today," said Sachin, more a statement than a question. Dilshan nodded, again enthusiastically. "Where do you play?"

"Centurion."

"Best of luck."

For Sachin, playing big tournaments has become as much par for the course as meeting people overawed by his presence.

The polished public presence, though, comes across clearly.

Natural, then, that Tendulkar had a more prolonged personal conversation with Muttiah Muralitharan, another legend with exemplary manners.

Dilshan won't be complaining: After scoring a century, he will now wish he could meet Tendulkar before every game.
