West Indies on Top After 17 Wickets Fall in 2nd Day

New Delhi: India bounced back with two late wickets as West Indies were 21/2 in their 2nd innings after the end of second day's play of first Test at Feroz Shah Kotla.

First, off-spinner R Ashwin dismissed Kieran Powell for duck to give India early breakthrough and then Pragyan Ojha dismiss another opener Kraigg Brathwaite on 2.

Earlier, West Indies bowlers struck in unison to dismiss India for 209 as they took the crucial 95-run first innings lead.

Rahul Dravid and Ishant Sharma stitched crucial 49-run partnership to defy West Indies attack, after losing skipper MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh quickly, but couldn't resist much as India were dismissed for 209 in 52.5 overs in their first essay.

West Indies gained a healthy first innings lead of 95 runs after the visitors were dismissed for 304 in their first innings.

Seamer Ravi Rampaul picked up Rahul Dravid and Umesh Yadav in one single over to finish off the Indian innings. India lost six wickets in the post-tea session.

Dravid, who scored 54 off 111 balls which included three boundaries, once again came to the fore as he held one end to lead India' resistance against the West Indies. India lost skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (0) and Yuvraj Singh (23) in single over soon after the tea break. West Indies skipper Darren Sammy struck twice in one over to put the visitors on the driving seat as India again lost wickets in pair.

India lost four wickets in the post-lunch session as they were reduced to 151/4 at tea on the second day. West Indies dismissed VVS Laxman (1) and Sachin Tendulkar (7) in quick succession as India continued to lose wickets.

Laxman became young Devendra Bishoo's second victim as India were reduced to 120 for 4 from 89/0 in a span of ten overs.

The wait for 100th international hundred from the master blaster persisted, when fast-bowler Fidel Edwards trapped Sachin leg before.

India also lost Virender Sehwag (55) and Gautam Gambhir (41) in quick succession after they gave the hosts a flying start against the visitors.

A fine stumping by Windies keeper Carlton Baugh off Devendra Bishoo brought an end to Sehwag's marauding act after the Indian opener raced to his fifty in just 36 balls.

Sehwag smashed nine boundaries in his 46-ball blitzkrieg and added quick 89 runs with Gautam Gambhir (41) to provide India a flying start.

Gambhir was unlucky to get stranded at the non-striker's end when a ball hit fiercely by his opening partner brushed Darren Sammy's finger before hitting the stumps. The left-hander played an aggressive run-a-ball innings of 41 runs with the help of seven boundaries.

Earlier, Pragyan Ojha took his maiden five-wicket haul to bundle out West Indies for 304 in their first innings. Indian spinners came out on top as Ojha and Ravichandran Ashwin shared nine of the ten West Indies wickets.

Ojha finished with a career-best figure of six for 72 runs in 34.2 overs.

Debutant spinner Ashwin started his career on the right note as he took three Windies wickets for 81 runs in 27 overs. Whereas, pacer Ishant Sharma accounted for the all important wicket of centurion Shivnarine Chanderpaul (118) to trigger the visitors collapse.

Chanderpaul managed to add just seven runs to his overnight score of 111 before he was trapped lbw by the lanky Delhi pacer. The left-hand bat hit a couple of sixes and seven boundaries in his 196-ball brilliant knock.
