Nottingham: West Indies won the toss and chose to bat with the promise of five days of unbroken sunshine in the second Test at Trent Bridge against Engalnd on Friday.
Shane Shillingford, whose offspinners took 10 wickets in his last Test against Australia on his home ground in Dominica, was preferred on a ground where spin has played a minimal part in recent years.
Ravi Rampaul, recovered from a stiff neck, replaced Fidel Edwards, who has had injury niggles, leaving Sammy to fulfil a third seamer's role on a ground that has traditionally offered England's pace bowlers great sustenance in recent years.
England were unchanged. As at Lord's, their only decision concerned the identity of the third quick bowler.
West Indies have won just two of their last 31 Tests, but in 22 matches against Nottinghamshire and England dating back to 1906, they have never lost a first-class fixture at Trent Bridge, a record that includes four wins and four draws in eight Tests.
