Harare: Australia A have won the Zimbabwe A Team Tri-Series after a thrilling two-run triumph against South Africa A in Harare on Friday.
Centuries from openers Philip Hughes (138) and David Warner (120) saw Australia A post a competitive score of 293-7.
Despite a collapse of 4-35 at one stage, South Africa A needed just two runs from the final two deliveries to secure victory.
But all-rounder Mitch Marsh (4-56) had other ideas, claiming a wicket and then a run-out as South Africa A were bowled out for 291.
Australia's total was built on the back of the brilliant opening partnership by the New South Welshmen, as Warner and Hughes picked off anything sub-standard from the bowling attack.
Both players were scoring at almost a run a ball and although the partnership was finally ended in the 38th over, it appeared that the damage had been done.
The 206-run stand came to a halt when Warner's 127-ball knock was ended by Roelof van der Merwe (3-58) but Hughes upped the ante almost immediately after his opening partner's departure.
But unfortunately for Australia A, a flurry of quick wickets fell as the likes of John Hastings (2), Marsh (5), Aaron Finch (20) and Callum Ferguson (1) all came and went cheaply.
Hughes also departed in that mess as Australia A lost 7-87 to finish the innings, with South Africa A heading into their run-chase with some confidence.
That confidence only grew after openers Jacques Rudolph (90) and Jonathan Vandiar (16) added 68 for the first wicket, before Tasmanian all-rounder Luke Butterworth (1-27) snared his side's first victim midway through the 11th over.
Rilee Rossouw (8) was dismissed shortly after, before Justin Ontong joined Rudolph at the crease and stabilised things.
It took spinner Nathan Lyon (3-55) to remove Ontong and when Rudolph and Heino Kuhn (1), and van der Merwe (1) were dismissed, South Africa had lost four quick wickets.
A fighting 70 from Vaughn van Jaarsveld kept South Africa A's hopes of victory alive, while cameos from Vernon Philander (22) and Rory Kleinveldt (32) put the chasing team in with a real shot of victory.
But when it came down to the last over, Marsh delivered, removing Kleinveldt before Rusty Theron (6) was run-out on the final ball, giving Australia a dramatic victory.
Lyon was named man-of-the-series for his feats with the ball throughout the series while Hughes was awarded the player of the match award.
