Mumbai: Sharad Pawar, the new ICC president, may now be looking into the affairs of international cricket from the swanky headquarters in Dubai.
However, in the run up to the 2011 ICC World Cup, the biggest work pressure for the cabinet minister currently stems from Mumbai, his home.
The Wankhede Stadium, in the premises of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), is scheduled to host the World Cup final on April 2, 2011. However the renovations are seemingly running against time.
Earlier, the MCA had kept November 30 as the deadline, but now it seems the fear of a delay is playing on the minds of officials involved. Hence, the World Cup tournament committee, headed by BCCI's Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty, has decided to keep the much-in-shape DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as standby.
Sources close to the development informed, "The committee conducted its first workshop in Mumbai on Tuesday and confirmed the decision to keep the DY Patil ground as a back up (in case of any last minute glitches)."
The only respite, the official added is, "There is someone like Pawar at the helm to speed up the process, given his political clout and the vast administrative experience." For Pawar, of course, getting the renovation of the stadium done in time will be a matter of personal pride.
