Lucknow: Parvinder Singh (78) and Piyush Chawla (79) helped Uttar Pradesh score 403 in their first innings on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Group B Super League match against Orissa on Thursday.
At stumps on day two, Orissa were yet to open their account, having played an over, with Natraj Behera (0) and Shiv Sunder Das (0) at the crease at the Dr Akhilesh Dasgupta Stadium on Thursday.
Earlier, resuming at an overnight total of 174 for four, the two not out Uttar Pradesh batsmen - Parvinder and Amir Khan went on to share a 111-run stand together before the former got out making a slow but steady 78 off 206 balls.
Amir also soon joined his partner in the dressing room after scoring 47 off 181 balls.
New batman Piyush Chawla, however, increased the momentum a bit and even though a couple of wickets fell almost immediately after Amir's departure, Chawla still managed to hold on to his wicket and go for his runs.
Chawla found an able partner in Shalabh Srivastava (23) as the duo put up a 85-run stand together for the ninth wicket.
Chawla did well to hit a fine 79 off 112 balls including eight fours and two sixes before falling to Debasis Mohanty, who finished with figures of 3 for 37.
Meanwhile, Orissa's Alok Chandra Sahoo claimed four for 100.
