Day-night Test

Umpires Fail to Spot Pink Balls During Trials

Melbourne: Players have not quite liked it and as it turns out, the umpires are also not too impressed with the pink balls for the proposed day-night Tests as they are not able to spot it after a point.

On trial in the Futures League fixtures in Adelaide and Brisbane this week, the balls have got mixed response from the players so far.

"As the umpire at the bowler's end there's no issues, I found it nearly glows at some stages. Square leg is a different issue I think, certainly we work as a team picking height for over-the-shoulder balls and there are times you lose it altogether," umpire Andrew Collins was quoted as saying in the local media.

"Today was overcast so we'd like to see what happens on a bright sunshine day, but at this stage it is a little bit difficult from square leg," he added.

South Australia captain Cullen Bailey said spotting the ball was also a problem for the players.

"Some of the guys found it a bit hard to catch, but it wasn't too bad. I think the thing they're worried about is that it's not going to last, but it seemed to last really well, it swung a bit early and it reversed a bit later on," he said.

"A few blokes got out from yorkers, so maybe there was a bit of a trail or something like that, but I think it was fine," he added.
