India v Australia, 2nd Test, Bangalore, 3rd day

Tendulkar & Vijay Tons Grinds Australia Down

Bangalore: A 308-run partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Murali Vijay has put India in a strong position on day three of the second Test in Banglarore.

The hosts have moved to 435 for five in reply to Australia's first innings of 478. Australian all-rounder Michael Clarke dismissed Suresh Raina (32) before close day three.

Australia's bowling attack struggled on a flat Bangalore track, and the highlight of the session came when 26-year-old Vijay (139) brought up his maiden Test ton.

After more than 20 minutes on 99, Vijay finally pushed a single to cover bring up his first century to set off jubilant celebrations.

Resuming after lunch on 224 for two, India stepped up the scoring rate in the second session after a dour morning's play, as Tendulkar (191*) in particular looked to get after the Australian bowlers.

Off-spinner Nathan Haurtiz (0-153) came under some particularly heavy fire, but in truth most of the bowlers looked ordinary on a track that offered little in the way of pace or bounce.

Mitchell Johnson (3-89) break a long partnership dismissed Murali Vijay caught behind and leg before debutant Cheterswar Pujara (4) in same over.

Ben Hilfenhaus (1-61) was the pick of the quicks, but debutant Peter George (0-38) struggled to make any inroads.

Earlier, Tendulkar's 49th Test century was the major highlight of a grinding first session.

Resuming on 128 for 2 in response to Australia's first innings of 478, the Indians were largely untroubled but plodded to reach 224-2 at lunch with Tendulkar and Vijay looking resolute.

India have already retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy after their thrilling one-wicket win in Mohali, and didn't look to be in any rush to increase the scoring rate.

Vijay was particularly defensive in the morning session, but all eyes were on Tendulkar, the little master, who became the first man to reach 14,000 Test runs late on day two.

After moving to 99 from a six off Hauritz, he smashed another off the spinner to bring up his 49th Test ton before lifting off his helmet to salute the Bangalore crowd.
