Taylor Joins Star List in Winning Award

London: Leicestershire's James Taylor joined some of English cricket's most famous names in being named the Cricket Writers' Club (CWC) Young Cricketer of the Year on Monday.

The 19-year-old batsman polled almost twice the number of votes cast for Ashes star Stuart Broad, the runner-up this year after winning the award back in 2006.

This season England Under-19 international Taylor became the first teenager to score 1,000 first-class runs in a season for Leicestershire.

In all he made he made 1,177 first-class runs in 26 innings during 16 matches at an average of 58.85 with three hundreds, six fifties and a highest score of 207 not out against Surrey, when he became the first teenager to score a double century for Leicestershire.

Past winners of the CWC award include Fred Trueman, Geoffrey Boycott, current selection chief Geoff Miller, Ian Botham and David Gower while eight former recipients represented England this season, including Andrew Flintoff.

This is the 60th year of the award and players must be England qualified and under 23 on May 1 to be eligible.

Andrew Symonds, born in Birmingham, central England, won the award in 1995 before opting to represent Australia.
