South Africa v England, 2nd Test, 5th day, Durban

Swann Five Seals Innings Victory Over Africa

Durban: England have completed the formalities in just 18 overs on the fifth day of the second Test on Wednesday.

They needed 4 wickets to win this match and they took those pretty quickly. What a match for the visitors. After electing to bat first, South Africa were bowled out for 343 with contributions from Smith, Amla and de Villiers.

England replied with a mammoth 574 for 9 dec, getting a massive lead of 231 runs. Five out of the top seven batsmen got excellent scores, with Trott and Pietersen missing out.

After spending nearly 2 days on the field, South Africa came out to bat expecting to bat comfortably like England on a flat pitch but Broad and Swann had other plans. They just ran through the side not allowing any batsman to hold ground apart from Paul Harris, who top-scored with 36. Swann was the hero for the match, picking up his best Test innings and match figures, 4-110 in the first innings and 5-54 in the second, ably helped by Stuart Broad who had 6 for the match, enabling England hand the Proteas an innings defeat, losing for the first time against the Brits at this venue.

Graeme Swann has been named the man-of-the-match for his match figures of 9 for 164.

England have drawn first blood. They nearly snatched defeat from a position of absolute comfort in the first Test but here, at Durban, they have been all over South Africa right from the time the hosts elected to bat. They bowled in the right areas consistently, not only when the ball was swinging, but even when nothing much was happening. The last match posted a big question mark over the batting capabilities of the Poms, but they replied well here, with most of the batters getting a good hit.

Morkel was dropped by Strauss off the previous delivery from Swann, which the left-hander edged low to the England captain's right hand, with the ball going on for four.

But Swann pushed the next ball through quicker and Morkel, stuck in his crease, was trapped leg before wicket.

Mark Boucher went on to make 29 before he gloved Stuart Broad down the leg side to fellow wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

He was given not out by umpire Amish Saheba but England asked for a review and replays showed clearly the ball had deviated off his glove so Boucher had to depart for the second time in the match after initially being given not out.

Paul Harris hit 36 before he scooped James Anderson to Broad at mid-on and Swann completed a comprehensive win when he had Dale Steyn leg before wicket.

South Africa erred with the ball, bowling too short and allowing the batsmen to settle on this slow track. Only Morne Morkel posted some trouble for the batsmen, pitching in the right areas. They were completely taken off guard in the second innings and their batting was going nowhere, with wickets falling like ninepins. The Proteas would now have to get to the drawing board and reconsider their bowling options, especially the way Ntini bowled here and de Wet bowled at Centurion. England would be sweating over the fitness of Collingwood who has been in tremendous touch in this tour.
