Colombo: Sri Lanka will re-admit players aligned with the unauthorized Indian Cricket League into domestic cricket, officials said on Friday, in a move that defies the world cricket establishment.
"Players will allowed to play for their respective clubs and share their expertise, but cannot represent the country", Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) media manager Shane Fernando said. The SLC had last year banned its five ICL players - Marvan Atapattu, Russel Arnold, Upul Chandana, Aviska Gunawardena and Saman Jayantha - from playing any official cricket matches. The decision comes two days after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) joined its counterparts from other countries in banning 13 players, including former captain Habibul Bashar, who has signed up with the ICL.
Memorable day for ICL
New Delhi: Welcoming Sri Lanka Cricket's decision to allow the cricketers aligned with the ICL to play in domestic tournaments, ICL executive board member Kiran More on Friday said it was not only a memorable day for ICL but also "Victory of Cricket".
ICC to decide: BCCI
Mumbai: BCCI on Friday put the onus on the International Cricket Council to respond to the Sri Lanka Cricket's decision to allow its players aligned with the rebel ICL to compete in the island nation's domestic tournaments. "We are concerned but this will be decided at the ICC level." BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said.
