Sri Lanka v Australia, 5th ODI, Colombo

Sri Lanka Look Consolation Win Before Test Series

Colombo: Australia have won the series, but Sri Lanka could still make the scoreline a more respectable 3-2 with victory in the final match in Colombo.

No more than pride will be on the line when Australia's ODI with Sri Lanka concludes in Colombo on Monday night with Michael Clarke's side having already won the series.

It achieved that feat with a five-wicket win in the fourth match of the series, with Brett Lee (4-15) and Xavier Doherty (4-28) playing crucial roles in the cruisy victory.

That win saw Australia take a 3-1 lead in the five-match series, although they will be keen to end the series on a high and continue their impressive form.

What has been key to Australia's terrific series has been their form with the ball.

On pitches that can often be difficult for bowlers the visitors have managed to frustrate Sri Lanka and effectively use subtle changes of pace in order to gain wickets.

In the three matches Australia have won, Sri Lanka have averaged just 177 runs with the bat, with the likes of Mitchell Johnson (10 wickets), Doug Bollinger (nine wickets) and Brett Lee (eight wickets) all instrumental for the series winners.

Thunderstorms are predicted for Monday's clash but if the weather can hold off for long enough the trio of pacemen might just have their say on the series for the final time.

Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara and captain Tillakaratne Dilshan have all made runs for Sri Lanka at different stages of the series, but one of them needs to make a big score and apply themselves as they hope to bat out their 50 overs for just the second time this series.

What has hurt Sri Lanka has been their inability to get someone to stay at the crease and let everyone else bat around them, with Tharanga and Mahela Jayawardene, the only two players to have faced more than 100 balls in an innings at one stage of the series.

If Sri Lanka can bat out their overs and score 250, they might just have enough bowling firepower to trouble Australia.

Speedster Lasith Malinga has eight wickets in three matches and should be well-supported by Ajantha Mendis and Seekkuge Prasanna, with the latter only making his debut on Saturday.

Prasanna snared 3-32 – including three wickets in four balls – in that match, and is fresh off a recent six-wicket haul for Sri Lanka A against England A just over a week ago.

But on the basis of what we have seen so far this series, it is hard to predict an Australian defeat.

Their batsmen have applied themselves and made runs and their bowlers have shown just how to get the most out of wickets that are far from bowler-friendly.

Thunderstorms are predicted for Monday's clash, which could disrupt the match, but if the full 100 overs are played, Australia enter the match as favourites.

The tourists have made just one change all series, replacing Shaun Marsh with Steve Smith for game four, and although the series is over, another strong side is expected as Australia look to gain the mental edge ahead of the first Test, which begins in Galle, on August 31.
