London: South African-born seamer Jade Dernbach made a late bid for an England spot in next week's opening Test against Sri Lanka when he took five wickets against the tourists on Friday.
Dernbach claimed 5-44 as Sri Lanka struggled to 266 all out in reply to England Lions' 493-8 declared at Derby.
"Obviously we are all trying to push our own cases forward to the selectors," said Dernbach in reference to the earlier batting of Eoin Morgan (193) and Samit Patel (119).
Sri Lanka's difficult preparations ahead of the first Test continued on the second day at Derby as their top order floundered against a strong England Lions pace attack. Jade Dernbach was the most successful of the quartet with 5 for 44 while Ajmal Shahzad and Graham Onions claimed two apiece as the tourists were bowled out for 266.
Sri Lanka collapsed from 59 for none to 97 for six, but recovered thanks largely to Suraj Randiv (76 not out) to muster 266.
