Johannesburg: Cricket South Africa (CSA) president Mtutuzeli Nyoka has said that there were no regrets in handing SuperSport Park, Centurion the final of the ICC Champions Trophy.
In the midst of a row between CSA and the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB), CSA also gave Centurion all of South Africa's matches in the Sept 23-Oct 5 tournament, along with the final.
The dispute has been settled and the GCB's ground, Johannesburg's famous Wanderers, has since been reinstated as one of the host venues of England's tour to South Africa later this year.
But the Champions Trophy fixtures remain unchanged, it was confirmed at the launch of the tournament in Johannesburg.
"I don't know about having any regrets," Nyoka said. "I've said before that the Wanderers is a special place, but we're fortunate in this country to have more than one venue capable of hosting this type of event.
"After the Indian Premier League we had so many people who told us what a wonderful venue SuperSport Park is."
The International Cricket Council (ICC) are attempting to beef up the stature of the Champions Trophy, which is considered less important than the World Cup and World Twenty20 competitions.
In doing so, the 50-over tournament has been reduced to only eight teams in a "short, sharp, prestigious" competition consisting of only 15 matches.
Other innovations for the sixth edition of the tournament include an increase of prize money to $4 million, which is four times the amount awarded at the 2006 edition, of which half will go to the winners.
The victors will also receive white Champions jackets similar to the green jackets awarded to winners of the Masters golf tournament.
The players who win Man of the Match awards will also receive something new - watches worth $8,500.
The 2009 Champions Trophy, which was originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan in 2008 before it was moved for security reasons, will start on September 23 with the opening match between Pakistan and the West Indies at the Wanderers.
The semi-finals will be played on October 2 and 3 at the Wanderers and Centurion respectively, and the final is scheduled for October 5.
All matches will be played at the two Gauteng venues.
