Dubai: Fast-rising South African Lonwabo Tsotsobe has developed lower back muscle spasm and been put on precautionary rest ahead of a two-Test series against Pakistan starting next week, his team sources said on Friday.
The 26-year-old from Eastern Province took a career-best 4-27 to help South Africa beat Pakistan in the first of a five-match series in Abu Dhabi last week. He also took five wickets in South Africa's 2-0 win prior to the one-day series.
South Africa lead the series 2-1.
Tsotsobe was left out of the South African team which played the fourth one-day match against Pakistan on Friday.
"Tsotsobe has been put on precautionary rest after developing lower back muscle spasms prior to the fourth one-day against Pakistan," a statement from the South African team said.
The instructions from the team physiotherapist, Brandon Jackson, are to prevent the strains from getting worse ahead of the Test series which starts with the first match in Dubai from November 12.
Convenor of selectors, Andrew Hudson said: "We have gone on the advice of the team physiotherapist to rest Tsotsobe for Friday's match. He has played five matches in eight days and has developed some stiffness and immobility in his lower back which is being monitored closely."
"Tsotsobe has had an outstanding tour of the UAE, both during the Pro20's and ODI's and it is never great to rest a player that if performing well.
He is an important part of our plans for the future, but this will also give us the chance to have a look at Wayne Parnell who comes with the similar left-arm variation that has troubled the Pakistan batsmen during the tour.
Tsotsobe has so far taken two wickets in two Tests, 22 in 13 one-day and seven in five Twenty20 for South Africa after making his debut last year.
