Townsville: South Africa coasted to an easy eight-wicket victory against New Zealand to finish third at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup on Saturday.
The third-place playoff saw the Proteas and the Kiwis - who lost semi-finals to Australia and India respectively - clash at Endeavour Park in Townsville.
Chasing a modest 91 to win, South African openers Quinton de Kock (50) and Chad Bowes (12) made a flying start.
Quicks Jacob Duffy and Matthew Quinn were in the firing line as de Kock blasted five boundaries inside the opening three overs.
Left-arm spinner Theo van Woerkom (1-34) dismissed Bowes in the eighth over for 12, caught by Joe Carter, but it did not stem the flow of runs as de Kock continued to hit out.
He smashed van Woerkom for three fours in the 12th over before departing in the next, with his 43-ball stay at the crease ending after he was trapped lbw by leg-spinner Ish Sodhi (1-17).
The damage had been done though, and late hitting from Theunis de Bruyn (19 not out) and Diego Rosier (nine not out) helped South Africa reach 94-2 inside the 15th over, giving them a huge victory.
Earlier, New Zealand captain Will Young won the toss and elected to bat in sunny conditions. Left-armer Jan Frylinck (2-18) was given the new ball for South Africa and in just his second match of the tournament was determined to prove a point to the selectors.
He removed Kiwis opener Ben Horne (four) in the second over, and had Young (zero) caught off the very next ball.
No hat-trick followed as New Zealand stemmed the flow of wickets with a steady 28-run union for the third wicket between Carter (20) and Robert O'Donnell (13).
But just as they had seen the new-ball bowlers off, Calvin Savage (3-14) broke the partnership as he had O'Donnell caught behind by wicket-keeper de Kock.
Cam Fletcher (zero) was out lbw in the same Savage over while moments later, Carter was also caught behind off his bowling.
That reduced New Zealand to 43-5 and the wickets continued to tumble as spinner David Rhoda (4-26) cleaned up the tail.
Connor Neynens (21 not out) faced 70 balls and remained defiant, but he received little support as the losers were bowled out for just 90 in the 37th over.
