Smith Century Puts South Africa in Command

St Kitts: Captain Graeme Smith hit  132 on Friday as South Africa’s batsmen dominated on the opening day of the second Test against West Indies at Warner Park.

The visitors reached the on 296-3 when stops play due to bad light after winning the toss this morning.

Smith was well supported by Alviro Petersen (52), Hashim Amla (44) and Jacques Kallis (45 not out).

Smith hit six fours and three sixes in his innings of 189 balls. The 29-year-old left-hander, who became the third South African to pass 7,000 test runs (after Kallis and Gary Kirsten) when he reached 88, spent four hours at the crease.

Off-spinner Shane Shillingford led the West Indies' attack with 2-91 off his 31 overs.

Smith shared two strong partnerships to set up South Africa. He added 99 for the first wicket with Petersen, who struck three fours and two sixes in 52 off 70 balls.

Once Petersen fell top-edging a sweep to deep backward square leg, Smith and Amla put on a century partnership for the second wicket.

Amla hit five fours in 44 off 99 balls before he edged Shillingford low to first slip to leave South Africa on 211-2.

West Indies were sloppy in the field and dropped two catches. Amla was let off when on 14 as skipper Chris Gayle grassed a catch at first slip off fast bowler Kemar Roach.

Smith also survived a chance, on 79, when he swept Shillingford hard to square leg where Shivnarine Chanderpaul could not hang on to the head-high opportunity.
