Sri Lanka v West Indies, 1st Test, Galle

SL vs WI 1st Test - Sri Lanka Favorite in Series Opener

Galle: Sri Lanka are determined to maintain their Test supremacy over the West Indies in their three-match series starting in Galle on Monday.

Sri Lanka won their last two home Test series against the West Indies in 2001 and 2005 and Sangakkara said they were keen to keep their unbeaten record.

Galle has been a happy hunting ground for Sri Lanka, who have won nine of their 16 Tests at the venue. They lost three and drew four matches.

"We are determined and pretty confident that we have the players to do that (maintain the record)," Sangakkara told reporters, while cautioning against overconfidence.

"You can't go to the last two Test series (in Sri Lanka). They are a different side and we are a different side. We don't have the likes of paceman Chaminda Vaas and off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (both retired).

"The key will be how our bowlers perform and at the same time the batsmen need to put a big score on the board."

Sri Lanka will be playing in Galle without Muralitharan, who retired in July with a world-record 800 Test wickets. He also played a major role in many of his team's wins at the venue.

But Sangakkara said his team had spinners in Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis who were capable of keeping pressure on the West Indies.

"Of course, we don't have Murali but we have three spinners who have been very impressive. The more they play the stronger they become. I think the Sri Lankan spin is in very good hands," said Sangakkara.

Randiv has become the main spinner in the squad, while Herath is an experienced bowler who has done a great job for us. We expect Mendis to come back very strongly.

Sri Lanka looked confident ahead of the Test, having recently clinched a maiden one-day series in Australia.

West Indies captain Darren Sammy has said his team is prepared to face the challenges posed by Sri Lanka ahead of the first Test at Galle starting on Monday.

"Sri Lanka is a place where lots of runs have been scored. If you look at the last few series played here, the batsmen have scored the runs. It looks like a very good wicket. In Sri Lanka the ball also spins so we have to take that into account and plan accordingly," said Sammy.
