Australia v England, 1st Test, Brisbane, 1st day

Siddle Takes Hat-trick on His Birthday in Ashes Opener

Brisbane: Australian paceman Peter Siddle claimed a hat-trick to bowl his team into a strong position against England on the opening day of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba on Thursday.

Siddle captured three wickets with successive deliveries to become only the 11th Australian bowler to take a hat-trick in a Test match.

The Victorian fast bowler dismissed Alastair Cook (67), Matt Prior (0) and Stuart Broad (0) with the third, fourth and fifth balls of his 12th over to rock England late on the first day.

Siddle, who celebrated his 26th birthday with the achievement, brought the crowd to its feet when he dismissed Broad leg before wicket to bring up his hat-trick.

It left England reeling at 197 for seven late in the day after they had won the toss.

Siddle, who had earlier captured the wickets of Kevin Pietersen (43) and Paul Collingwood (4), started his hat-trick by having Cook caught by Shane Watson at first slip.

He then bowled wicketkeeper Prior and had Broad lbw when the ball hit the lanky fast bowler directly on his boot in front of the leg-stump.

Glenn McGrath was the last Australian bowler to take a Test hat-trick against the West Indies in Perth in December 2000.

Siddle now joins some of Australian great bowlers in taking a Test hat-trick - Fred Spofforth, Hugh Trumble, Shane Warne and McGrath.

It was the second Test hat-trick at the Gabba ground after West Indies paceman Courtney Walsh's feat against Australia in 1988.
