Manchester: Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait is looking forward to showing English cricket crowds just what he can do after being handed an unexpected recall to the one-day side.
The 27-year-old, already in the UK where he has been playing domestic Twenty20 matches for Glamorgan, was called up by Australia for their one-day series against England after off-spinner Nathan Hauritz was ruled out of the remaining three matches with a foot injury.
Tait was close at hand when England beat Australia by four wickets at Glamorgan's Cardiff headquarters on Thursday to go 2-0 up and could come into the side for the third match at Old Trafford here on Sunday.
The 27-year-old's slingshot bowling style earned comparisons with Australia pace great Jeff Thomson but the strain of his action, which has led to career-interrupting injuries, has seen Tait quit the first-class game having played in just three Tests.
And his experience of the English game has not been a tale of unalloyed success. He had a poor season as Durham's overseas player in 2004 and then enjoyed mixed fortunes on his Test debut at Trent Bridge a year later.
Tait then took a break from cricket but the creation of the Twenty20 Indian Premier League (IPL) gave the South Australian paceman a way back into the game and he was in the Australia side that lost the World Twenty20 final to England in Barbados last month.
Now Tait, who at his best remains capable of express pace, is keen to win his first ODI cap since February last year.
"The times I have bowled in England I have not gone that well. I played a couple of Tests here and I had a stint with Durham which was terrible when I was younger.
"For Glamorgan I have bowled okay this year, nothing brilliant, so we will see how we go and hopefully I can improve on that. It is nice to be back in the squad and that the selectors are still thinking of me as a one-day cricketer is fantastic."
He added: "You have those days when you come out and bowl with good pace and some days not so much. All I can do is give it everything. Hopefully there are a couple of overs in there that I can make an impact and, if I do get a game, get a couple of early wickets."
