Dhaka: All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been appointed captain of Bangladesh for the remaining of the home series against New Zealand, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said on Friday.
Shakib was appointed as the captain after regular skipper Mashrafee Mortaza was ruled out of the series with an ankle injury sustained in Tuesday's first match, which Bangladesh won by nine runs.
The second one-day in the five-match series was washed out on Friday. Shakib, who led Bangladesh most of the last season in the absence of the injured Mortaza, was initially reluctant to take the job again but agreed after an emergency meeting of the BCB's technical evaluation committee.
"We have consulted Shakib and he has agreed to captain the side in this series. We have not decided on a deputy for him and in case he has to leave the field for any reason he will pick the vice captain." BCB said.
The third match of the series will be held at the same venue on October 11. "With Mortaza injured, the board will discuss the captaincy issue again after the series," BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus said.
