Colombo: It was a battle of attrition on the second day of the 3rd and final Test here on Saturday as Lanka inched ahead and left India hurting, both on and off the field. Kumar Sangakkara showed great character and patience to blunt the Indian attack and get to an unbeaten century leaving the SL at close with 251 for six on the board, with the possibility of extending their current two run lead into a sizable one still within reach.
India were hit by three major injuries and could also have down without some inconsistent review decisions here at the P Saravamuttu Stadium, but after Sanga and Vaas looked to be running away with the game in the first session, the Indian bowlers did well to check the flow of runs and bag crucial wickets. Sangakkara, however, was patience personified as he inched his way to his 17th Test century, remaining unbeaten on 107 at stumps.
India, though, got their first blow even before a delivery was bowled, when VVS Laxman injured his left ankle during practice. Post lunch, Sachin hurt his left elbow while he was attempting a catch. Post ea, it was Ishant's turn, as the pacer slipped in his follow through and pulled a muscle. There was more to come as wicketkeeper Parthive Patel got a nasty blow on his nose off a Kumple delivery.
Brief Score: Sri Lanka 251 for 6 (Sangakkara 107*, Vaas 47, Zaheer 2-57, Harbhajan 2-81) lead India 249 by 2 runs
