Ranji Round-up Day 1 - Zaheer, Agarkar Shine

New Delhi: Ravi Inder Singh stood tall amid ruins with a gritty century as Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan ripped apart the Punjab batting line up to help Mumbai reduce the hosts to 242 for nine on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Super League match in Chandigarh.

India discard Agarkar (4/41) and Zaheer (3/45), who is returning to competitive cricket after a shoulder injury, shared seven wickets among them to give the reigning champions Mumbai an edge in the contest.

It was Zaheer who started the rot when he sent back Sunny Sohal (2), who edged one to stumper V Samant.

Barring a third wicket partnership of 68 runs between Ravi Inder, who struck an impressive 104, and Uday Kaul (28), Punjab kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Ravi's fighting knock contained 17 hits to the fence and one shot over the ropes before being dismissed by Agarkar.

Delhi vs Baroda
Opener Shikhar Dhawan (122) hit a composed unbeaten century to put Delhi in a strong position of 300 for two in their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match.

After the cheap dismissal of skipper Aakash Chopra (21), left handed Dhawan and Guarav Chabra (65) batted beautifully as they rattled up a 134-run partnership to negate the early loss after opting to bat.

Murtuza Vohra broke the partnership when he trapped Chabra but there was no respite for Baroda bowlers as Rajat Bhatia continued the good work with Dhawan as the duo racked up an unbeaten 136-run stand for the third wicket.

At stumps, Dhawan was batting on 122 with Bhatia at solid 70 on the other end.

Dhawan's 247-ball knock included 12 boundaries while Bhatia hit seven shots to the fence in his 141-ball innings.

Gujarat vs Orissa
In Gujarat's Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match against Orissa, India discard Parthiv Patel led from the front with a composed 83 as Gujarat scored 237 for seven on the opening day in Ahmedabad.

Electing to bat, skipper Patel shared two important partnerships to take the Gujarat to a reasonable total on day one.

Patel, who struck 10 fours in his 128-ball innings, shared a 53-run partnership with Hem Joshipura (36) for the third wicket and 89-run stand with Rujul Bhatt (46) for the fifth wicket.

But after Patel departed, two quick wickets fell as Gujarat were reduced to a sticky 203 for seven before a late cameo by Ashraf Makda (31).

At the draw of stumps, Makda was batting on 31 which he made from just 23 balls with the help of one four and four sixes. Timil Patel (11) was giving company to Makda.

For Orissa, Dhiraj Singh was the most successful bowler with 4/88 from his 28 overs while Debasis Mohanty took two wickets for 26.

Kerala v Andhra Pradesh
Skipper B Sumant's unbeaten 58 and his 82-run fourth wicket partnership with Venugopala Rao (69) helped Andhra Pradesh score 215 for 5 on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Plate Group B match against Kerala.

Electing to bat, Andhra got off to a good start with openers Watekar (29) and Prasad Reddy (16) putting on 46 runs, but after that they lost quick wickets to be at 62 for 3.

However, former India player Venugopala Rao and Sumant played sensibly to take the score to 144/4 before the former departed after scoring 69 in 92 deliveries, including 12 boundaries and a huge six off left-arm spinner Prashant.

Sumant continued his good form and along with Manoj Sai (17) added another 48 runs for the fifth wicket. Sumant's 58 included seven boundaries.

Kerala captain and former India fast bowler, S Sreesanth remained wicketless. He bowled 13 overs three of which were maidens and gave away 33 runs.

Spinner Sreekumar Nair captured 2/30, while Jagadeesh 1/11 and Sony Cheruvathoor 1/31 were the other successful bowlers.
