Napier: New Zealand captain Ross Taylor retired hurt on 122 against Zimbabwe before rain stopped play before lunch on the second day of the one-off Test on Friday.
Taylor, leading New Zealand in a Test for the fourth time and for the first time at home, suffered a calf strain while attempting a single in the 10th over of the day after increasing his score from 111 not out overnight - his sixth Test century.
New Zealand moved on from 331-5 overnight to 392-5 in 15.2 overs before rain forced players from the field less than an hour before lunch.
No further play was possible lunch the interval at which New Zealand had added 61 runs to its overnight score.
BJ Watling took his total from 15 at the resumption to 52 - his second Test half century and his second on Napier's McLean Park - and Doug Bracewell was 11 not out when play was stopped.
The second new ball was only 10 overs old when play resumed on Friday but the Zimbabwe bowlers were wayward and New Zealand was able to steadily accumulate runs.
Watling was the more aggressive batsman and Taylor was happy to take a subordinate role, building slowly on his innings top score which followed the innings on Thursday of Brendon McCullum (83) and Martin Guptill (51).
He had pushed the ball forward of the wicket and set off for a single to the fourth ball of the 100th over of New Zealand's innings when he appeared to stumble, before limping to the non-striker's end.
Taylor received medical treatment on the field before retiring hurt with New Zealand 365-5.
Doug Bracewell, who replaced Taylor at the crease, had a let-off when he was only 2 and New Zealand was 368-5, when he drove a ball from Shingirai Masakadza directly to Tinotenda Mawoyo at cover who put down an easy catch.
Brief scores
New Zealand 392 for 5 (Taylor 122*, McCullum 83, Watling 52*)
