India v Sri Lanka day 1 Report

Rain Calls The Shots On Day One

Colombo: Rains often take centre stage when a Test is played in the sub-continent in the months of July and August. Very few sessions can be played without the rain god’s interference. Wednesday, the first day of India’s Test series against Sri Lanka, was no different. In fact, play started at 3:30 pm, as overnight and morning downpour had left the ground soggy.
Sri Lankan skipper Jayawardene won the toss and elected to bat, perhaps wanting his tweakers – Muralitharan and debutant Ajantha Mednis – to have the last go on this wicket. The Lankan batsmen did not really disappoint their skipper, ending the day at the 85 for 2. Only 22 overs were bowled when the umpired called of play due to bad light. Opener Malinda Warnapura (50) and skipper Mahela Jayawardene (16) were at the crease.

After the initial setback of losing lefthand opener Michael Vandort, who nicked Ishant Sharma’s away going, rising delivery to Dinesh Karthik, the Lankan batting settled down. Sharma and Khan bowled well in the tandem and the latter got his reward too, in the form of the prized wicket of Kumar Sangakkara.Rains often take centre stage when a Test is played in the sub-continent in the months of July and August.
