Nagpur: Rahul Dravid shares a special bond with Nagpur. His in-laws stay here and he has played some of his best innings in this city. Now, for the first time since he made his debut for India 13 years ago, Dravid will be missing an international game here.
As a result, the Pendharkars (Dravid's wife Vijeta's family) and their relatives won't be able to see ‘Jammy' play, although they will be watching the day-nighter at Jamtha. And there are others too who are disappointed.
"It is sad that he is not playing tomorrow. I am a huge Rahul fan and wanted to see him score against the Aussies. He should have been in the squad. I am confident he will regain his place soon," said 19-year-old Sunny Jaiswal, an engineering student.
The 36-year-old former Indian skipper has played six ODIs and an equal number of Test matches in the city. Dravid has a phenomenal average of 98 in the six ODIs he has played here, which includes a knock of 116 against Sri Lanka in 1999. Incidentally, both his last ODI and Test in Nagpur were against Australia.
Dravid was included in the ODI side after a gap of two years and did quite well in the triseries in Lanka and Champions Trophy in South Africa. But to the surprise of many, he was shown the door.
