Vadodara: Ricky Ponting proved that batting first was not a problem despite the early-morning start in Vadodara, where he and Tim Paine gave Australia a strong platform.
Ashish Nehra and Ishant Sharma made the only two breakthroughs for India and at the halfway mark, Ponting loomed as the danger man and was unbeaten on 64 with the total at 137 for 2.
He had been joined by Cameron White, who had reached 10, after Paine (50) cut hard outside off and tickled a catch behind off Ishant. Paine had enjoyed moments of luck, including on 14 when Sachin Tendulkar missed a tough chance at slip, but generally he looked comfortable in the conditions.
Paine was particularly strong off his pads, flicking over and through the on-side field whenever the fast men bowled too straight. Paine and Ponting put on a 97-run second-wicket partnership and rarely looked troubled by the Indian attack as the seamers battled for consistency on a pitch lacking pace.
