West Indies v Australia, 4th ODI, Gros Islet

Pollard Ton Blasts Windies to Series 2-1 Lead

Gros Islet: Kieron Pollard smashed a blistering century as West Indies defeated Australia by 42 runs in the fourth ODI to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Pollard came to the field in the 26th over with the West Indies in big trouble after spinner Xavier Doherty took the wickets of Johnson Charles and Dwayne Bravo with consecutive balls to leave the hosts struggling at 4-106.

But the West Indies allrounder more than survived Doherty's hat-trick ball as he unleashed on the Australian attack, firing off 102 from just 70 balls as he helped the West Indies amp up the scoring rate and finish with a more-than competitive 7-294.

So impressive was the West Indies batting at the death that in the last 12 overs the hosts added 145 runs, as Shane Watson (2-55), Doherty (2-64) and Brett Lee (2-72) copped some serious stick.

In reply, several members of Australia's top-order made starts but most of them failed to go on with the job as the visitors lost wickets with regularity throughout their innings.

The exceptions were Lee, who scored an unbeaten 59 off 48 deliveries as he attempted to see his side home, and David Hussey, who managed 57.

But neither of their efforts were enough to see Australia over the line as they were dismissed for 252, the result seeing the West Indies take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series after the last match in Kingstown ended in a disappointing tie, just when the hosts were on the cusp of victory.

The Australians will rue several missed opportunities in the field as Pollard was dropped on four occasions during the last 12 overs, with two of those drops resulting in sixes.

On a good batting wicket, Australia were almost on the back foot immediately after Watson won the toss and sent the West Indies in to bat as the hosts opened with 56 without loss before Adrian Barath (41) was caught behind off McKay in the 10th over.

The Australian bowlers were well on top for the next 16 overs, restricting the West Indies to just 50 runs and taking three wickets along the way, including Doherty's two in the 26th over.

But Pollard, Andre Russell (32 off 34 balls) and West Indies skipper Darren Sammy (31 off 13) more than made up for that slow period as they battered the Australians throughout the closing stages of their innings.

Needing 295 to win, Australia started the chase on the backfoot when David Warner (one) fell in just the second over.

Watson (28) and Peter Forrest (24) took back some of the momentum with a 53-run stand before Sammy (2-42) struck to remove Watson in the ninth over.

Sammy took Forrest's wicket in his very next over before Russell (2-34) chipped in by claiming George Bailey (25) and Mike Hussey (26) in the space of three balls during the 21st over to leave Australia teetering at 5-112.

David Hussey, Matthew Wade (15) and Lee attempted to bring Australia back into the contest, but their efforts were in vain as the West Indies wrapped up the tail after Hussey was bowled by Kemar Roach (2-72) in the 39th over.
