PCB Still in Two Minds Over Captaincy Issue

Karachi: PCB continues to play musical chairs on the issue of captaincy as it remains unclear on whether to appoint a single person for all three formats of the game or to opt for separate skippers for Test and limited overs cricket.

So far the Chairman of the board, Ejaz Butt has met with Shahid Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq and indications were that the meeting was related to the captaincy issue for the Twenty20 World Cup from April 30 in the West Indies.

But it remains unclear as who will get the captaincy for the World Cup as Ejaz Butt on his part has not helped the situation by making confusing statements about the issue.

Two days back, Butt was quoted in the media as saying that the captain would only be appointed for the T20 World Cup and there would be separate captains for the different formats of the game.

But on Monday, PCB chief had again changed his statement insisting the board would only be appointing the captain this week for the T20 World Cup.

Sources in PCB informed that Butt had consulted the issue with his legal advisors on the possible fallout the board would face, if it appoints Afridi as the T20 captain because of the recent disciplinary action taken against him.

"The concern is what will be the reaction to such a decision since Afridi was not only fined three million rupees but has also been put on a six-month probation period for behavior," a source said.

He, however, indicated that Salman Butt and Abdul Razzaq appeared to be out of the race since both were not willing to play under each other's captaincy.

Razzaq recently opted to play for Sialkot when his native team Lahore appointed Salman Butt as the captain for the national T20 championship in Karachi.
