Pakistan Wreck New Zealand to Gain Control

Wellington: Resurgent Pakistan dismissed the New Zealand first innings for a paltry 99 on the second day of the second Test at the Basin Reserve on Friday.

Mohammad Asif was leader of the sharp Pakistan bowling attack, claiming four wickets while leg-spinner Danish Kaneria picked three.

At stumps, the Pakistan second innings had reached 64-2 with a formidable lead of 229 runs.

Both Pakistan openers Salman Butt (18) and Imran Farhat (35) were sent back by Iain O'Brien after the duo added a 49 runs.

Skipper Mohammad Yousuf (10) and Misbah-ul-Haq (one) were at the crease at the end of the day's play.

For New Zealand, Ross Taylor was the top scorer for the home side with a 40-ball 30 while Daniel Flynn made 29 in a 46-run partnership for the third wicket. New Zealand lost their last eight wickets for just 51 runs.

Pakistan, who are trailing the series 1-0, took a significant 165-run lead.

Earlier, Kamran Akmal (70) and Umar Gul (31) helped Pakistan add 103 to their overnight score, lifting their total to a competitive 264.
