Pakistan Struggle Against Vettori in Rain Hit Day

Wellington: Daniel Vettori (3-42) and Daryl Tuffey reduced Pakistan to 161-6 at stumps on a rain-hit first day in the second Test at the Basin Reserve on Thursday.

Only 58 overs could be bowled after rain delayed the start of play by more than two hours and later bad light halted the home team's progress for the day.

Tuffey, having played his Test against England in 2004, snared Umar Akmal (46) and Shoiab Malik (nine) after tea to dent the visitors.

Pakistan, after being to take first strike, started well with a 60-run opening stand between Imran Farhat (32) and Salman Butt (29) before Iain O'Brien struck the first blow, scalping the wicket of Butt.

The Kiwi skipper then got into the act as he first removed Farhat and then jolted the visitors by trapping his counterpart Mohammad Yousuf leg before for no score just before tea.

Vettori struck again when he trapped Misbah-ul-Haq, who flew in on Monday, for 21.

New Zealand made one injury-enforced change that won the first Test by 32 runs in Dunedin last weekend. Daryl Tuffey made his way into the Kiwi Test line-up after four years as he replaced fellow pacer Shane Bond.

Pakistan made three changes to the eleven that went down in a close finish in the first Test. Misbah-ul-Haq, came in for Fawad Alam while opener Khurram Manzoor was replaced by Butt and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was preferred over off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.

Brief scores
Pakistan: 161 for 6 (Umar Akmal 46, Daniel Vettori 3-42)
