Nottingham: Umar Gul's exhilarating Test best score of 65 not out ensured Pakistan avoided the follow on against England on day three of the first Test at Trent Bridge on Saturday.
Pakistan, resuming on 147 for nine and needing eight runs to avoid the follow on, were dismissed for 182 as last man Mohammad Asif was run out without scoring, giving England a first innings lead of 172 runs.
Gul was left stranded after his 46-ball innings, which comprised eight boundaries and four sixes. He took 18 runs off Steven Finn in the second over of the day, with three fours and a six that was pulled over square leg. He repeated that stroke twice more.
Number nine Gul, not known for his batting skills, clipped a James Anderson half-volley on middle stump through midwicket for four with the first ball of the day.
