Mumbai Indians v Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2012, Mumbai

Narine, Tiwary Take Knight Riders Home

Mumbai: After a slow start, Mumbai Indians lost wickets in heap as Kolkata Knight Riders successfully defended their modest total of 140 runs to secure a sensational 32-run victory at Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.

Chasing 141, Mumbai Indians looked uncomfortable right from the start against a disciplined Kolkata attack that skittled out the hosts for 108 with five balls to spare.

Iqbal Abdulla struck in his first over to remove Herschelle Gibbs, giving Mumbai first jolt after a steady start.

Gibbs scored 13 and shared 26-run opening stand with Sachin Tendulkar for the first wicket in six overs.

Though Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik steadied the innings, Kolkata fought back after the strategic time out to send back both batsmen in quick succession.

Spinner Sunil Narine spun magic to bowl out Sachin Tendulkar (27) before L Balaji got Karthik (20) caught by Yusuf Pathan, hurting Mumbai Indians chase. Karthik's dismissal reduced Mumbai to 66/3 in 13 overs.

Mumbai then lost wickets at regular intervals with asking rate soaring up at the same time.

Mumbai's biggest bet, Ambati Rayudu, Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard too failed to throw any challenge to the visitors.

Earlier, disciplined bowling by Mumbai Indians restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 140/7 in the IPL clash at speedy Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.

Seeking a victory to seal a play-off berth, MI were on top from the time skipper Harbhajan Singh opted to field after winning the toss as their bowlers, led by R P Singh, kept the rival batsmen on a tight leash.

There was little of note in KKR's innings, which never kept going after the loss of opener Brendon McCullum and Jacques Kallis in successive balls to R P Singh.

Skipper Gautam Gambhir made 27 off 23 balls with a six and three fours, while Manoj Tiwary scored an attractive 41 off 43 balls with two sixes and as many fours before both threw away their wickets.

The lower order batsmen tried their bit and managed to add 46 runs in the last five overs, with Yusuf Pathan making an unbeaten 21 in 21 balls with two fours, but the score looked below par on a track that looked good for batting.
