Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board have appointed senior batsman Misbah-ul-Haq as captain for the Test series against South Africa, while retaining Shahid Afridi as skipper for the one-dayers and T20 matches.
PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar confirmed the appointments and said details would be given later.
Misbah's appointment comes as a surprise given that he was only recalled to the national team for the one-dayers and T20 against South Africa on Thursday after a gap of six months.
Misbah, who has never captained Pakistan in test matches, last played in the T20 World Cup in West Indies.
Misbah, who was dropped after the disastrous tour of Australia at the start of the year, was picked in a 16-man side for two tests against South Africa in the United Arab Emirates in November.
Left-handed opening batsman Taufeeq Umar is also recalled.
Shahid Afridi has been retained as skipper of the team for the five one-day internationals and two Twenty20s preceding the test series.
Pakistan had announced a 15-man squad on Thursday to take on South Africa later this month in the UAE, but surprisingly did not name a captain.
The opening match, a Twenty20, is on Oct. 26 at Abu Dhabi.
Squad: Imran Farhat, Taufeeq Umar, Asad Shafiq, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah ul Haq (capt), Umar Akmal. Azhar Ali, Saeed Ajmal, Danish Kaneria, Abdur Rehman, Zulqarnain Haider, Umar Gul, Tanvir Ahmed, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir (subject to fitness).
