Colombo: Sports Minister Chandrasiri Bandara Ratnayake on Monday described Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as the third most corrupt organisation in the country while handing over the new selection panel's reins to former captain Aravinda de Silva.
"The first and second are education and police. Sri Lanka Cricket is the third-most corrupt institution in the country," Ratnayake told reporters here.
Accused of financial bungling, SLC is currently functioning as an interim committee headed by former spinner Somchandra de Silva and the minister vowed to sack it by next week.
Ratnayake said with the next year's World Cup -- to be jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh -- fast approaching, he would appoint a new panel to look after SLCs administration.
"Aravinda has nine months to prepare and groom a squad that is capable of winning the World Cup. We have not won the Cup since 1996, my aim is to win another title for our country," Ratnayake said.
The previous selection committee, headed by Asantha de Mel, had been sacked last week.
The new panel comprises two former wicketkeeper-batsmen, Amal Silva and Ranjith Fernando, and former first-class cricketer Shabir Asgerally.
de Silva said he would do his best to ensure that Sri Lanka wins the title it clinched for the first and only time in 1996. de Silva was part of the team which won the title when the event was held in India.
"I want another team to win a World Cup. I'll try and work hard and honestly as possible to ensure this task is achieved," he said.
de Silva retired after the 2003 World Cup after playing 308 ODIs and 93 Tests.
