Centurion: South Africa captain Hashim Amla won the toss and chose to bowl in the opening one-day international against Australia at SuperSport Park on Wednesday.
Amla backed his bowlers to make use of early morning rain in Centurion, near Pretoria, in the first match of a three-game series against the top-ranked team in one-day cricket.
No. 3 ranked South Africa is captained by Amla in the absence of injured limited overs skipper AB de Villiers.
The Proteas recalled Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn after the country's leading batsman and main strike bowler were rested for the recent Twenty20 series.
Faf du Plessis also returned in the middle order for the home team, while veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher was picked for his first ODI in 16 months in the absence of De Villiers.
Michael Clarke takes over the captaincy of Australia for the first time on the month long tour, but batsmen Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh both miss out on Wednesday's series-opener with injury.
Highly rated fast bowler Pat Cummins and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, younger brother of Shaun, make their one-day debuts for Australia, while experienced campaigners Clarke, Ricky Ponting, Brad Haddin and Michael Hussey were restored to the line-up after missing the T20s.
The teams enter the ODI series level after sharing the two-match Twenty20 series.
