West Indies v Australia, 2nd Test, Port-of-Spain, 3rd day

Lyon Haul Gives Australia Hope

Trinidad: A stunning Nathan Lyon spell just before stumps on day three swung the second Test against the West Indies in Australia's favour.

In response to Australia's first innings score of 311, the West Indies looked comfortable at 4-230 with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (94) and Neosingh Deonarine (55) in control.

But Lyon (5-68) ripped through the middle and lower order as he took five wickets in seven overs in a superb display of spin bowling in Trinidad to leave the West Indies at 9-252 at stumps.

After a 20-minute delay to the start of play due to a power failure which meant the DRS technology was not available, the Aussies spilled an early chance as Chanderpaul was given a reprieve.

Lyon was the unlucky bowler as the batsman's edge hit wicketkeeper Matthew Wade's pads, before deflecting to Michael Clarke at slip who could not hang on.

Michael Hussey (1-19) was introduced into the attack by Clarke and the move paid dividends as the part-time seamer trapped Darren Bravo (38) in front after the hosts had made a positive start.

Chanderpaul and Deonarine took the West Indies to lunch at 4-132 and despite almost two hours being lost in the afternoon due to rain, the pair continued to impress.

Deonarine started to pick up his scoring rate but just after passing 50, he became Lyon's first victim.

The off-spinner lured the batsman out of his crease and Wade was quick to react, completing a stumping that broke the 130-run partnership.

Chanderpaul was then adjudged LBW six short of his century, ending his 217-ball stay at the crease that included 10 fours and one six.

West Indian captain Darren Sammy (1), spinner Shane Shillingford (4) and paceman Kemar Roach (0) all fell victim to Lyon in his inspired spell as the 24-year-old snared his second five-wicket haul in his 12th Test.

Wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh (17 not out) and Fidel Edwards (zero not out) survived just under five overs before stumps as the West Indies finished the day trailing by 59 runs with one first innings wicket in hand.
