India v West Indies, 2nd Test, Kolkata, 2nd day

Laxman, Dhoni Star on India's Day; India 631, WI 34/2

Kolkata: West Indies were 34/2 in their first innings when play was stopped due to bad light on the second day of the second Test against India at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday.

R Aswhin had Kraigg Brathwaite caught by Gautam Gambhir at forward short leg for the second breakthrough.

Umesh Yadav gave India an early breakthrough when he had Adrian Barath caught by Virender Sehwag at second slip.

The breakthroughs came after VVS Laxman's unbeaten 176, captain MS Dhoni's 144 and Rahul Dravid's 119 enabled India to declare their first innings at 631/7.

Laxman's unbeaten 176 was studded with 12 hits to the fence.

Dhoni added 224 runs with Laxman for the seventh wicket before edging a Kemar Roach delivery into the hands of wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh.

Dhoni hit the second ball after tea for a six and fell on the next delivery.

Laxman and Dhoni took India to 613/6 at tea.

This is Laxman's third score over 150 and Dhoni's fifth century.

This is Dhoni's second century at the venue.

Nothing seemed to work for the West Indies as Laxman and MS Dhoni took India over the 500-run mark.

Dhoni hit his 24th half-century and alongwith Laxman put up an unbeaten 217-run stand for the seventh wicket.

Dhoni, who reached his fifty off 66 balls, was lucky to escape getting caught behind twice on no balls.

India were 433/6 with Laxman and Dhoni at the crease when bad light stopped play and early lunch was taken due to the delay.

The interruption came after Laxman continued his superb run at the Eden Gardens by scoring his 17th Test century.

This is Laxman's fifth century at the venue and he is already the leading Indian run-scorer at the Eden Gardens.

Laxman now has equalled fellow Hyderabadi and former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who also has five hundreds at the venue.

The wristy Hyderabadi's century came after Yuvraj Singh's miserable stay at the crease was ended by West Indies captain Darren Sammy who trapped the southpaw plumb in front of the wicket.

Yuvraj managed to score 25 and he was peppered by short deliveries by both Fidel Edwards and Kemar Roach but they overdid it and Sammy pitched one up as Yuvraj played across the line only to see the ball thud into his pads.

The day's play started with VVS Laxman and Yuvraj resuming the Indian first innings at 346/5.
