Latif Launches T20 Tourney in Karachi

Karachi: Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has launched a Twenty20 tournament in Karachi, claiming that it could soon pave the way for an Indian Premier League-style national event.

The Karachi Champions League, being held by the Rashid Latif Cricket Academy with the help of the city government, carries a winners purse of Rs 10 million and Rs five million for the runner-ups.

"The idea behind keeping such an attractive prize purse is to give out a message that in Pakistan cricket there is no shortage of sponsors if you are sincere in your approach and to offer incentives to players at the club level," Latif said.

The Karachi Champions League started two days back at a new floodlit ground built by the city government with a crowd of around 25,000 in attendance, a record for any local event.

"This tournament could lead to the revival of club cricket in the country, we want to set an example for others to follow at the national level," Karachi's mayor, Mustafa Kamal said at the opening ceremony.

Rashid said that another reason he wanted to hold the Karachi Champions League was to convince the Pakistan board they can also start their own Pakistan Premier League on the lines of the IPL.

"If we can with the assistance and support of the city government get so much funding for this event I am sure the PCB can increase the prize money for something like the PPL," Rashid said.
