Lancashire Sign Katich and Chanderpaul

London: English county Lancashire signed Australia all-rounder Simon Katich and West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul on Thursday.

The pair have moved to Old Trafford as replacements for Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who is unable to join up with Lancashire because of international commitments.

Katich joins in June to play in the first half of the Friends Provident Twenty20 and he will also be available for the Roses match against Yorkshire before linking up with the Australia squad for their Test series against Pakistan.

The 34-year-old left-hander has played in 50 Tests and 44 one-day internationals and has a fine first-class record scoring nearly 18,000 at an average of more than 54.

Katich said: "I'm really excited to be going to a big club like Lancashire and am looking forward to the opportunity it presents.

"They've got a great squad of guys with youth and experience so I couldn't be happier.

"I love playing the Twenty20 game so hopefully I can assist Lancs in a successful campaign."

Chanderpaul will join Lancashire in mid-July and will stay for the remainder of the season.

The left-handed batsman has been an integral member of the West Indies side for more than a decade with nearly 9,000 runs in 123 Tests.

Chanderpaul said: "I was very excited when Lancashire approached me with this opportunity.

"After having such a great association with Durham, I feel ready for a fresh challenge at Old Trafford. I look forward to joining the squad in July and contributing to the team's success."

Both signings are subject to visa regulations and the approval of their respective cricket boards.
