Bloemfontein: Kings XI Punjab defeated Delhi Daredevils by six wickets and kept their hope alive to play in the semis of IPL. Daredevils have already made into the semis with 16 points while victory has pushed up Kings XI to sixth place with 12 points. Apart from Punjab, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Deccan Chargers also have 12 points each. The battle for semi-final intensifies as the tournament progresses.
Chasing a modest total of 121 runs to win Kings XI achieved the runs in 19.1 over for the loss of four wickets. The top scorer Kumar Sangakkara remained not out on 43 to guide Kings XI Punjab to victory. The Daredevils bowlers were exceptional with their line and length as they forced the Punjab batsmen to fight hard for achieving the total. Pacer Ashish Nehra was almost unplayable and he gave only six runs in his 4 overs apart from picking up a wicket. Farveez Maharoof took two wickets by conceding 29 runs.
Delhi lost their third match of the tournament as Kings XI Punjab won by six wickets. This means two things. Delhi got a jolt just when they needed one so that they pull up their socks for a tougher road ahead and Kings XI are still alive, breathing the tournament.
It was a do-or-die game for the Kings and they did better than their opponents to live another day. Yuvraj Singh won the toss, elected to field first, rode on impressive bowling performances from Brett Lee, S Sreesanth, Irfan Pathan and restricted a strong Delhi batting line-up to a mere 120. When the chase began, Kings XI were always in the game till the end and won with five balls to spare.
The side clinging on for hope before the semi-finals played with grit, while the one on song with near-flawless performances this season turned in a poor display. Brett Lee handed Virender Sehwag another poor score,
Brief Score: Kings XI Punjab 123 for 4 (Sangakkara 43*) beat Delhi Daredevils 120 for 9 (Karthik 32, Lee 3-15, Sreesanth 2-20) by six wickets.
