Wellington: New Zealand Cricket appointed former Test player John Wright as coach on Monday in a bid to turn around the side's run of 11 one-day defeats ahead of next year's World Cup.
Wright, 56, a former opening batsman for New Zealand, is credited with laying the foundations for India's current success during his time in charge of the sub-continental powerhouse from 2000-2005.
His appointment ends Mark Greatbatch's 11-month tenure as New Zealand head coach after 11 successive defeats in one-day internationals, including series whitewashes against India and Bangladesh.
New Zealand also appointed a three-man independent selection panel, relieving captain Daniel Vettori of selection duties amid fears his dual roles within the team had become too much of a burden.
