Cuttack: Catapulted by dazzling centuries from skipper Manoj Tiwary and Ishant Jaggi, East Zone piled up an impressive 328 runs for five wickets on the opening day of their quarterfinal match against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy cricket tournament here today.
Put in to bat, East Zone began their innings on a steady note even though they lost an early wicket as in Natraj Behera (12), who was caught by Akkash Chopra off pacer Pankaj Singh with the scoreboard reading 29.
East Zone's innings gained momentum with Jaggi displaying skillful batsmanship, scoring valuable 118 runs off 221 balls with the help of 17 hits to the fence and one six.
While Jaggi stuck around for 292 minutes before being caught by Mohammad Kaif off Singh, Sreevats Goswami contributed useful 37.
East Zone's position was further consolidated with skipper Tiwary amassing 109 runs off 160 deliveries with the help of 15 fours and one six before he was lbw by Singh.
While Saurabh Tiwary was run out at 19, Wriddhiman Saha and AR Sahoo were not out at the crease with 18 and four runs respectively at stumps.
Singh was the pick of the bowlers for Central Zone with figures of three for 87 while left-arm spinner Murli Kartik claimed the wicket of Goswami caught by Umesh Yadav.
