Bangladesh v West Indies, 1st Test, Chittagong, 1st day

Iqbal, Rahim Fifties Steady on Opening Day

Chittagong: Opener Tamim Iqbal & captain Mushfiqur Rahim scored a steady half-century to help Bangladesh reach 255 for four at stump on Friday's opening day of the first Test against West Indies.

A solid performance from Bangladesh's batsmen on a placid track marked the start of the Test series in Chittagong, leaving the bowlers potentially facing five days of hard work. A slightly overcast morning was consistent with the forecast for rain, but the sun didn't take long to break through the cloud cover, confining whatever assistance was available for the bowlers to just the first hour of the day. Deciding to bat without hesitation, Bangladesh's batsmen, led by half-centuries from Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal, built a good platform for a formidable first-innings score but suffered a few jolts along the way, some self-inflicted.

Bangladesh was 74-1 at lunch but lost two more wickets in the second session as West Indies tried hard to break through the hosts' top order until tea at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Iqbal collected his 52 from 141 balls that included five boundaries before he was caught by Kraigg Brathwaite off Marlon Samuels (2-67).

Skipper Darren Sammy (1-43) trapped promising Raqibul Hassan lbw at his 41 in the 56th over. At tea, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on 26 along with Shakib Al Hasan not out for 0.

Bangladesh made a good start and justified its decision to bat first by moving to a creditable 74-1 at lunch.

Opener Imrul Kayes scored 10 before becoming the only player dismissed in the opening session, caught by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh off Ravi Rampaul.

Shahriar Nafees reached 21 before retiring hurt when a bouncer from Fidel Edwards got between peak and grille on his helmet and hit his face.

Bangladesh gave Nasir Hossain and Mohammad Ilias Sunny their Test debuts. West Indies named Baugh as wicketkeeper, replacing Denesh Ramdin, who was behind the stumps in the limited overs contest.
