Kolkata: Indian pace spearhead Zaheer Khan is likely to miss the upcoming three-match One-day series against South Africa after sustaining a leg injury during the second Test.
Sources said S Sreesanth may replace Zaheer in the team for the ODI series starting on February 21 in Jaipur.
Zaheer has been out of the field since Wednesday's post-tea session and ICC rule states that a player has to compensate the amount of time he spent outside before bowling or batting.
As per the ICC's standard Test match playing conditions rule, "If the player is absent from the field for longer than eight minutes, the player shall not be permitted to bowl in that innings after his return until he has been on the field for at least that length of playing time for which he was absent."
"Such absence or penalty time absent shall be carried over into a new day's play and in the event of a follow-on or forfeiture, this restriction will, if necessary, continue into the second innings," the rule states.
The leading Indian strike bowler remained confined to the dressing room and did not put on the playing jersey, hinting that he has been ruled out for the remainder of the sessions.
India coach Gary Kirsten had on Wednesday said that Zaheer had stiffness in his quadriceps.
"There was stiffness in his quadriceps and he was given ice treatment as precautionary measure. We will see how he goes tomorrow."
