India v Aussie 2nd Test, 3rd Day

Indian Openers Take Lead Past 300, Mishra Heroics

Mohali: Australia bowling attack isn't ageing, but it seems toothless. Their batsmen aren't greenhorns, just groping for a purple patch. The combinations of the two has resulted in Ricky Ponting's men struggling to same the second Test.

By close of play on the third day, India having expectantly refused to enforce a follow-on, had stretched their lead to a mammoth 301 runs with 10 wickets in hand. this has left Aussie with the dreary  prospect of chasing a huge last-innings total on a track with enough turn for discomfort.

On Sunday, it was Haryana leggie Amit Mishra who turned up the charm, Kumble's last minute replacement foxing the Aussie with sharp-turning leg-breaks and well disguised googlies to bag a memorable 5 for 71 on debut.

With India thoroughly dominating the day's play, only Shane Watson 78 (156b, 10x4, 1x6), who has bagged more wickets than Brett Lee 35 (96b, 6x4) on this tour, and Lee him self put up a strong resistance in the middle session by putting on 73 for the eighth wicket, taking Australia to within a hair's breadth of the follow-on mark of 270.

Sehwag 53* (71b, 6x4) and Gambhir 46* (68b, 4x4) then coasted merrily along at 4.35 to rub it in as an under-pressure Ponting fund himself with little option but to stick to an ultra-defensive field.

Brief Score: India 469 and 100 for 0 (Sehwag 53*, Gambhir 46*) lead Australia 268 (Watson 78, Hussey 54, Lee 35, Mishra 5-71) by 301 runs
