In three successive overs, Ishant and Zaheer, bowling perfect lines and lengths, removed Malinda Warnapura, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, to expose Sri Lanka's inexperienced batsmen.
Sri Lanka loose first three wickets at only 10 runs. And last five wickets added just 6 runs. Sehwag declared Man of the Match for his double century in first inning and half century in second inning. Harbhajan claim 10 wickets, he claim fifth times more than 10 wickets in a match.
Before lunch, Muttiah Muralitharan had removed Dinesh Karthik and Sourav Ganguly in two overs to engineer a collapse in which five Indian wickets fell for 14 runs. Scoreboard.

- 3rd Test victories recorded by India in Sri Lanka. Apart from their first win at Galle, they had won by 235 runs at Colombo, SSC in 1993-94 and by 7 wickets at Kandy in 2001-02. Sri Lanka have lost three Test at this Venue.
- 6th times Man of the Match awards won by Virender Sehwag in the Test career - his first against Sri Lanka. His previous five awards being two each West Indies and Pakistan and one against South Africa.
- 10 wickets claimed by Harbhajan Singh in the Test. For the first time in his career, he has claimed Ten wickets in a match on away. Other four times he got 10 wickets in India.
- 18 wickets claimed by Ajanta Mendis in his first two Test. Only four bowlers have claimed more wickets than Mendis' in their first tow Tests. India's Narendra Hirwani (24), England's Alec Bedser (22), Australia's Bob Massie 921) and England's Syd Barries (19).
